Chocolate and Pasta and Bread…OH MY!

chocolate pieI Love FOOD!

Lately I’ve noticed that many people feel strongly inclined to clarify something about them selves to me, probably because they know I’m a health coach.  The conversation usually goes something like this, “You have to understand, Melanie, I really, really, REALLY love food!”

Believe me when I say that I understand this huge, deep passion for food that they’re describing.  I can recall those same words coming from my mouth upon many occasions.  The last thing I ever wanted was to do was give up my FOOD!

BUT…There was one thing that I really didn’t like about food - the uncontrollable cravings.  Two of my weaknesses - Marie Callendar pies and Mountain Huckleberry ice cream!  And No matter how hard I tried, I never seemed to have enough will power to control my sugar cravings. On top of that I had to face my “perfectionist” self in the mirror feeling like a giant failure in that arena.

Through the years beginning in my teens, through my twenties and thirties and even into my forties I rode the Medusa Roller Coaster ride of Yo-Yo dieting.  Sound familiar? Dieting was an unspoken hobby of mine.  I was one of those individuals that didn’t like to announce that I was on a diet, because it was too painful and embarrassing to admit.  I would sneak stacks of frozen lean cuisines and weight watchers meals into the freezer in the house and hide them behind other frozen items.  That’s just one of the many closet stories I have to tell of my journey.

What finally got me to my aha-moment was when I became pre-diabetic and rheumatoid arthritis began to take over my life.  I refused to passively accept this as my inevitable demise.

With help I came to understand that cravings can be mild and friendly or they can be downright ruthless, grabbing ahold of you and refusing to let go.

To my surprise in a relatively short amount of time my taste buds experienced an extreme makeover and complete overhaul; they now live a joyous and fulfilling life. I finally learned to accept and understand my cravings, and I still get to really, really, REALLY love food - including chocolate and pasta and bread, oh my!

Oh, yes, we love, love food too!
My fiancé and I have been on a yeast free, sugar free diet for about 6 weeks now. It's amazing how one's taste buds change! The carb and sugar cravings start to go away!
We'll be on this diet until March 16th and then on the 17th since it's St. Paddy's day, we'll go off it to celebrate and I can have some chocolate again too. But now that we've been eating different foods we're actually enjoying it so we will continue to "mostly" eat in this new fashion.

Hi Melanie,

Happy Birthday! Hope you have a happy, healthy year.

I would like to go to your happy hour. Someday I'll be back in Prescott when you are presenting. I hope your business is doing well.

Best wishes from my heart to yours.

Mary
