Ahhh, Change. It’s the most popular topic on the Internet this week, and probably for the remainder of the month. Some folks love resolutions; some call them intentions, rituals, goals or promises.
On the other hand I’ve noticed that there appears to be a New Years Resolution revolt going on all over the place – on Facebook, on blog posts, in newsletters, newspapers, etc…
Gulp… Do I dare admit that I happen to like resolutions? I suppose it’s ‘cause I like viewing the new year as a blank canvas where I get to see measurable improvements as well as sweeping changes. When you sweep you can see your accomplishment instantly.
I do; however, choose one clear guiding word for the year that directs my actions toward changing old thoughts, patterns, beliefs, and behaviors. Then I define what that word means to me. Last year my word was “Simplify”.
2011 Year in Review: Here’s how my guiding word played out...
- I quit my stressful (part-time) job that I did not love, or even remotely enjoy for that matter.
- Went back to school to get my certification as a Health & Nutrition Counselor.
- Took every single weekend off (no work for two days in a row every single week). WOW! That’s a biggy!
- I sleep better, because I now have a regular sleep routine that my body loves, loves, loves!
- I set and honoroed a daily “Quittin’ Time” in order to spend more time with my family and friends in the evenings.
- I cooked more and ate out less.
- Addressed a few more health issues -- needed a little outside help from my own health counselor (love ya Halina!) and got them in check! Yay!
- Found a variety of movements that I really enjoy, which has made workouts feel more like play. This is what inspired me to create the "Ladies' Healthy Happy Hour" program, so I could try out more movements like Belly Dancing, and Hula Hoops for Fitness! Oh Baby, watch out!
- Enjoyed growing a garden with my husband and reaping the benefits.
- I cleared more negative clutter out of my head!
- Said “no” more.
- Beautiful New Friends came into my life. And I'm so grateful that three of my dear friends with close calls are still around to laugh with and hug.
- Have better relationships with all four of my teenage kids.
- Have much deeper and richer love for my husband.
- Gained more clarity and confidence in myself.
- Worked on rusty old resentment and allowed myself to feel empathy for someone that left a deep scar of pain on my heart many years ago.
- Discovered that my expression of anger has changed drastically when a few serious family matters popped up to test me – It feels more like deeply concerned or calmly annoyed rather than rage.
- Prepared to launch my new business in 2012.
- Had a lot more laughter, fun and happiness in my life.
- Discovered just how much more I accomplish personally and professionally when I give myself time to star gaze. Time to stroll and play without structure. Ideas come. Revelations reveal themselves. Ah ha’s take my breath away. You never know where the muse lives. That’s why it’s a muse. I love making space for it.
- Recognized the blessings in my life, and grew much closer to God.
This year my “Resolution” and guiding word is “Radiant”.
Defined as: Expanding upon my previous word, “simplify” -- Radiant will guide me in a “Pay-it-Forward” fashion while I build my practice as a health counselor. I will trust in God’s will that maintaining simplicity in my life will keep my life manageable and healthy, which will set the tone for me to radiate my experience, knowledge, training and energy outward so I can be an instrument for positive change in the world (big or small).
How will I know if I’m succeeding? I will ask myself every evening: “Am I excited?
YES gets a checkmark √ on my Calendar
NO gets an X.
If I have 21 YES days in the month, I’m on track.
I feel best, most alive, happiest and most useful when I’m riding along my creative edge, and excitement is my barometer to measure that.
